| The
River Leven
The River Leven, one of Scotland's fastest flowing
rivers, has a catchment area that encompasses all of Lock Lomond,
covering approximately 800 square kilometres. The River Leven, after
weaving its way along its 7 mile course, feeds into the Clyde estuary.
A number of
bridges span the Leven from a verity of historical periods.
The Original Dumbarton Bridge that spans the river in Dumbarton's
town centre was built in (Date) as the main river crossing. |
A thriving
shipbuilding industry and the then new marine engineering industry
grew up along the river's banks, in Dumbarton in the early 1850'
at the river's confluence with the Clyde Estuary. This new industrial
base triggered a meteoric rise in the skilled and overall population
of the town of Dumbarton and saw a rapid expansion and development
in a great many other secondary industries, which supported shipbuilding
along the River Leven and Clyde.
Fly-Fishing has become a popular recreational sport
along the length of the river. Typically, the fish caught along
the banks of the Leven are Salmon and Trout. |
